The Benefits of Pilates
Pilates gets your mind in tune with your body. By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how to control its movement. The quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Proper breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency. Last but not least, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress.
Conventional workouts tend to build short, bulky muscles - the type most prone to injury. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured.
Building on the principles of Joseph Pilates, Pilates exercises develop a strong "core," or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle.
In conventional workouts, weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance - a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain. Pilates conditions the whole body, even the ankles and feet. No muscle group is over trained or under trained. Your entire musculature is evenly balanced and conditioned, helping you enjoy daily activities and sports with greater ease and less chance of injury.
Pilates exercises train several muscle groups at once in smooth, continuous movements. By developing proper technique, you can actually re-train your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion - invaluable for injury recovery, sports performance, good posture and optimal health.
No other exercise system is so gentle to your body while giving it a challenging workout. Many of the exercises are performed in reclining or sitting positions, and most are low impact and partially weight bearing. Pilates is so safe, it is used in physical therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries.
Pilates is also an extremely flexible exercise system. Modifications to the exercises allow for a range of difficulty ranging from beginning to advanced. Get the workout that best suits you now, and increase the intensity as your body conditioning improves.

A Brief Biography of Joseph Pilates
German born Joseph Pilates was living in England, working as a circus performer and boxer, when he was placed in forced internment in England at the outbreak of WWI. While in the internment camp he began to develop the floor exercises that evolved into what we now know as the Pilates Mat Work.
As time went by, Pilates began to work with rehabilitating other detainees who were suffering from diseases and injuries. It was invention born of necessity that inspired Pilates to utilize things that were available to him, like bedsprings, to create resistance equipment and exercises for his patients, and ultimately the Reformer.
Pilates was drawing on strong personal experience in fitness. He had been an unhealthy child, which led him to seek out and study many kinds of self-improvement systems.
Pilates drew from studies in Eastern practices such as Yoga and Zen. He was also inspired by the ancient Greek ideal of man perfected in development of body, mind and spirit. Pilates studied anatomy and developed himself as a body builder, a wrestler, gymnast, boxer, skier and diver.
After WWI, Pilates briefly returned to Germany where his reputation as a physical trainer/healer preceded him. He worked briefly training the Hamburg Military Police in self-defense and physical training. In 1925 he was asked to train the German army. Instead, he packed his bags and took a boat to New York City. On the boat to America Joseph met Clara, a nurse, who would become his wife. Pilates went on to establish a studio in New York and Clara worked with him as he evolved the Pilates method of exercise, invented the Pilates exercise equipment, and trained students.
Pilates called his work Contrology. He defined Contrology as the comprehensive integration of body, mind and spirit. Pilates was a firm advocate of quality over quantity with regard to exercise. He was looking for efficiency in movement. Each movement had to be accomplished with full attention and done smoothly with control. With that goal, Pilates created exercises that develop what we now call, core strength, in order to maximize the ease and flow of each movement. He was also very much convinced of the importance of breathing fully. Pilates encouraged students to breathe deeply, even using the lungs in a bellows like way, so as to truly fill and cleanse the lungs.
"A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion." -- J. Pilates
Pilates New York studio put him in close proximity to a number of dance studios, which led to his discovery by the dance community. Many dancers and well known persons of New York depended on Pilates Contrology training for the strength and grace it developed in the practitioner, as well as for its rehabilitative effects. Until exercise science caught up with the Pilates exercise principles in the 1980s, and the surge of interest in Pilates that we have today got underway, it was chiefly dancers and elite athletes who kept Pilates work alive.
Pilates taught in New York from 1926 to 1966. During that time he trained a number of students who not only applied his work to their own lives but became teachers of the Pilates Method themselves. This first generation of teachers who trained directly with Joseph Pilates is often called the Pilates Elders. Some committed themselves to passing along Pilates work exactly as he taught it. This approach is referred to as classical style Pilates. Other students went on to integrate what they learned with their own research in anatomy and exercise sciences, creating a group of contemporary teachers and styles of Pilates work.
Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967 at the age of 87. He had maintained a very fit physique throughout his life, and many photos show that he was in remarkable physical condition in his older years. He is also said to have been quite a flamboyant personality. He smoked cigars, liked to party, wore his exercise briefs wherever he wanted, and could be an intimidating, though deeply committed, instructor. Clara Pilates continued to teach and run the studio for another 10 years after Josephs death.

ACUPUNCTURE
The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.
The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
Medical acupuncture is a system which can influence three areas of health care:
The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

Ionic Detox Foot Bath
Internal cleansing through Ionization Technology, assisting the body in detoxifying and creating more energy.
Since the body is composed of 70% water, it is the perfect way to address wellness for the whole body. The benefits of detoxifying in this manner is similar to walking in the sand along the beach, only more powerful because your feet are in direct contact with the ions being created in the water. Water has an almost perfect balance of positive & negative ions. When you immerse a body mass into water, the vibration frequency of the water will affect the vibration frequency of the body due to the interaction of the magnetic & electrical field. It's an exceptionally wonderful and natural healing tool. It is a painless and relaxing process and unlike prescription drugs, there are no harmful side effects.

More Americans are turning to therapeutic massage treatment to provide relaxation, relieve tension associated with the daily stresses of their busy lives, or simply to help maintain good health and achieve a balanced lifestyle.
There are so many healthy benefits to receiving massage therapy on a regular basis:
Relieves Stress
Encourages Relaxation
Improves Posture
Improves Circulation
Lowers Blood Pressure
Helps Manage Pain
Relaxes Muscles
Improves Flexibility and Range of Motion
Relieves Tension-Related Headaches
Strengthens The Immune System
Massage Modalities:
Swedish Massage
The goal is relaxing the entire body and this is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Additional techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching.
Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage but is used to target knots and release chronic muscle tension. Other benefits include reducing inflammation and helping to eliminate scar tissue. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Sports Massage
Sports massage can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Athletes have discovered that specially designed massage promotes flexibility, removes fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries, and prepares them to compete at their absolute best.
Trigger Point
A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. Trigger point massage (also known as myotherapy) is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.
Hot stone
Hot Stone Therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness, and increases circulation and metabolism. Each 90 minute Hot Stone session features the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body to allow for deeper relaxation of the muscles.

Jade Relaxation Bed with Far Infrared Heat
When far infrared heat penetrates through the skin into muscular tissue and ligaments, it transforms from light energy into heat energy. The thermal effect within the deep layers of tissues cause blood vessels in capillaries to dilate which improves blood circulation and promotes healing and wellness.
For years, therapists and physicians have recommended the combination of heat and relaxation to ease chronic back pain, speed recovery from injuries, improve rest, concentration, and promote a general sense of well-being.
The relaxation bed employs patented far-infrared heat strips that line the inside of the bed. The far infrared heat emitted from these strips will penetrate up to 3 into your muscles creating uniform warmth that can be felt for up to one hour after use.
The bed uses customized jade rollers to deliver a thorough head-to-toe relaxation experience. The far infrared heat also gets absorbed into the jade rollers delivering a penetrating, contact-heat to the parts of your body being relaxed.
Far-infrared heat is a safe light energy that cannot be seen by the human eye and simulates the heat given off by the sun. This heat is absorbed by a process called conversion which sends the heat directly into your muscles without having to heat the air between your skin and the heat source.
Once you lay down on the Relaxation Bed and choose your program you will begin to feel heat travel throughout your entire body while the jade rollers begin to kneed out all of your built up tension and pain. As you enjoy the feeling of warmth, comfort and tranquility, allow yourself to release all of your stress and anxiety.

Perhaps the most renowned of all Pilates equipment is the Reformer. With its sophisticated system of springs, straps and pulleys, more than 100 exercises can be performed on this surprisingly versatile apparatus.
The crux is in the gliding platform on which one can sit, kneel, stand or lie on their front, back or side. The user pushes and pulls off the foot bar using the arms, legs, wrists and ankles to slide back and forth along the rails in a controlled manner while the tension in the springs gently works the muscles.
The Pilates Reformer helps one establish torso stability and postural alignment while working peripheral limbs in a range of motion. The adjustable springs allow for progressive resistance, which helps to lengthen and strengthen the muscles rather than building bulk. It makes for an effective, no-impact stretching and toning workout that is friendly to the joints.
Don't be surprised if some beginner Reformer exercises seem simple - a relaxing, almost effortless glide back and forth on the carriage with none of that overexertion sensation you get from pumping iron. The effects go deep, and you'll engage muscles you never knew you had. As you progress, the fitness challenge becomes significantly greater.
Deceptively resembling a stylish little stool, the Pilates Chair is one versatile exercise machine. Don't let the word "chair" fool you - it's not necessarily a sit-down workout.
While many of these Pilates exercises are performed seated on top and pressing down on the step/pedal with your feet, others entail lying on the floor, standing straight up, lunging forward or doing push-up like moves with the arms.
More than 75 exercises can be performed on the Chair - it makes it a great addition to your physical fitness routine.
Once again, adjustable spring resistance is the key to challenge with this specialized piece of fitness equipment. The spring attachment positions make for a wide range of resistance. While pressing down on the step with arms or legs, much of the stabilizing work is up to the torso - it's harder than it looks. This apparatus activates the lower back, buttocks, shoulder, transverses abdominals and pelvic region and heightens neuromuscular coordination. From a rehabilitation perspective, the Pilates Chair is particularly effective for stretching and rebalancing muscles that have been strained or injured.
Different names for essentially the same thing, the Pilates Spine Corrector sort of resembles a whistle shape, with a semi-circular arch plus an angled step or seat. Handles or grips on the side allow for more security in movement.
This unit is effective for stretching the spine and shoulders in a safe, stabilized, supported way. It adds variety and challenge to a Pilates mat routine or circuit training session whether one is a novice or expert.
